The Unbothered May Vibe — How Black Women Are Living This Month

There’s a specific shift that happens in May that doesn’t happen in any other month. It’s not the dramatic arrival of warmth, that’s April’s job. May is quieter than that. May is the month you realize the world has been waiting for you to show up in it. The window has been open. You just haven’t walked through yet.

That’s the energy we’re moving with this month. Discovery. Deliberate presence. Turning wherever you are (your city, your kitchen, your evening) into something found rather than just passed through.

This is how The Unbothered are living in May.

How May Feels

May feels like the first meal you eat outside and stay for a second glass. Like remembering your city has streets you’ve never walked down. Like something finding you that you forgot you were looking for.

It’s the particular warmth of afternoon light through a window you actually opened. The world, finally, on your terms. The recognition that winter kept you smaller than you needed to be — and May is giving you back your range.

What May Sounds Like

The Unbothered May Playlist was built for open windows, unhurried mornings, and anywhere you’re going this month. It opens with Solange’s Cranes in the Sky — weightless, warm, the exact feeling of not being in a rush. Sade’s Kiss of Life follows with that slow, elegant glide that makes a simple walk feel like a scene.

Erykah Badu, Amaarae, Tems, Wizkid — the middle of the playlist stays global and grounded, the kind of music that sounds like drifting through an unfamiliar neighborhood with nowhere to be.

Then it settles into bossa nova — João Gilberto, Jobim, The Girl from Ipanema — for the café table moments. It closes quietly with Khruangbin, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Surprise Chef. Music that sounds like the city editing itself around you while you walk through it slowly.

What We’re Consuming This Month

Reading: We’re finishing May with Kennedy Ryan. If you haven’t read the Hoops series yet, Hook Shot is the one that will transport you — there’s a Black woman from Louisiana at the center of it whose culture, language, and connection to the bayou is written so specifically and so lovingly that you’ll read it slowly on purpose (but you’ll likely blow through it in 24 hours like I did 😅). The Hollywood Renaissance series is next on my list since Score is releasing on the 16th of this month.

Watching: We’re in a New York state of mind this month. Rewatching Sex and the City for the streets, the energy, the way the city feels like a character with a personality you want to know better. Then moving into Black romantic comedies that deserve a second watch — Boomerang, Love Jones, and The Photograph (which I didn’t watch closely enough the first time, but just watched Saturday night and LOVED it). Even if you’ve seen them all before, put it on again and watch them through a different lens.

Doing: Take yourself somewhere in your city you’ve been meaning to go and haven’t. A neighborhood, a street, a coffee shop two miles from your house. But don’t just go, really get dressed for it. Don’t rush getting there! The point isn’t the destination, it’s practicing what it feels like to move through your own life at your own pace. I spent Friday afternoon at a coffee shop I’d saved to my favorites on TikTok. It was worth the 25 minute trip into the city (Midtown Atlanta).

What’s In Our World This Month

These are the things making May feel like something worth slowing down for. All linked via ShopMy (find the full May Favorites collection below).

Sensori+ Play — Blood Orange Habanero — The drink that makes a Tuesday feel like a decision. Blood orange brightness, a slow habanero warmth at the finish. Pour it over ice. Stay a little longer than you planned. Shop it →

Fishwife Smoked Rainbow Trout — The best snack plate you’ll make all month starts here. Layer it on sourdough with goat cheese, add crackers, salami, a pickled egg (that’s what I’m doing anyway per the proof pic below)— and suddenly a Wednesday afternoon feels like something worth sitting down for. Shop it →

(Pictured from left to right) Publix peppered salami, Back to Nature sea salt crackers, spreadable goat cheese, pickled eggs drowning in Texas Pete hot sauce, McCain’s hash brown, Trader Joe’s hash brown, Fishwife Smoked Rainbow Trout

Samba-style sneakers — Everything the Samba energy promises at a price point that actually makes sense. Sleek, low, effortless. The shoe for the neighborhood walk, the market run, the day you want to look like you tried without trying. Shop it →

Chesapeake Bay Cranberry Dahlia Candle — Warm, and a little sweet. This candle has been a favorite for years and it’s been burning all month and it makes the whole room feel like late spring in the best way. Shop it →

Everyday shoulder tote — The bag I take everywhere now. Tan-brown, structured enough to look intentional, relaxed enough to carry everything. Goes with the sneakers. Goes with the sundress. Goes with the “I’m just going to the farmers market” energy that is very much May. Shop it →

Instax Mini + Film — May is the month to start actually documenting your life instead of just living in your phone. No editing, no posting, no algorithm. Just a small square of something real. I even ended up buying photo albums to keep all my pictures in (very 90s of me 😌) Shop it →

Stainless Steel Ice Cream Goblet — The most unnecessary necessary purchase of the season. A goblet…for ice cream (I’m personally a Talenti lover particularly the Southern Butter Pecan flavor). Weighted, cold to the touch, and it makes a scoop from your freezer feel like an occasion. Shop it →

The Unbothered May Syllabus

The Syllabus is what The Unbothered do in the world this month. There are a wide range of things on the list including some that a free, accessible, and analog. No membership required just a willingness to show up for your own life.

Things to Do This May

  • Visit a neighborhood in your city you’ve never walked through
  • Take yourself to dinner alone — table for one, no apologies
  • Cook something that takes all afternoon — let the process be the point
  • Buy yourself flowers just because it’s May
  • Start something analog — a puzzle, a camera, a sketchbook
  • Sit somewhere outside you’ve never sat before
  • Try one thing you’ve been curious about but keep putting off
  • Watch something that makes you want to go somewhere

Hobbies for Every Kind of Unbothered Woman

For The Ritualist: Candle-making or fragrance blending. Turn scent into ceremony.

For The Wanderer: Neighborhood journaling. Walk an unfamiliar street with a small notebook. Build a private map of your city.

For The Nester: Container gardening or herb growing. Turn a windowsill into a small living kitchen garden.

For The Sensualist: Cook from a cuisine you’ve never tried. One new dish, one new ingredient. Pleasure through the unfamiliar.

For The Unplugged: Analog photography. A disposable or film camera, one outing per week. No previewing. Just waiting to see what you found.

For all of us: Pressed flower and botanical art. Collect blooms from walks or markets. Press them into something beautiful and permanent.

Four (4) Ways to Anti-Rot Your Morning

  1. Put something blooming where you’ll see it first thing
  2. Make your drink without your phone in your hand
  3. Sit outside for five minutes before the day has any demands
  4. Write one word for how you want today to feel.

Four (4) Ways to Anti-Rot Your Evening

  1. Change out of your work clothes the moment you’re done
  2. Eat dinner at the table — not the couch, not the counter (bonus points for eating at a dining room table and not a breakfast room table or coffee table)
  3. Step outside after dark, even just for a few minutes
  4. Light something before you turn on a screen

Four (4) Ways to Anti-Rot Your Weekend

  1. Leave the house with no real destination at least once
  2. Cook something that makes your whole home smell good
  3. Put your phone in another room for one full hour
  4. Do one thing this weekend purely because it sounds fun

This Month’s Unbothered Type: The Wanderer

May belongs to The Wanderer. She is most herself when she has nowhere she has to be — a new street, a new city, a new restaurant where nobody knows her name. She thinks best when she’s moving. She has eaten alone at more tables than most people visit in a lifetime, and she considers those among her best meals.

Her May looks like walking a neighborhood she’s never properly explored. Taking herself to dinner and staying long enough for dessert. Coming home from a walk with one thing she found. Cooking something slowly, all afternoon, just because. Ending the month knowing a version of her city she didn’t know before.

Her anthem: “I don’t need a reason to go. Going is the reason.”
